Summer reading registration open

Early registration is underway for Tails and Tales, Danville Public Library’s summer reading challenge, and the entire community is invited to participate.

“Summer reading is always so exciting,” said Russell Carter, library director. “My two boys have a blast logging in their reading minutes and completing the challenges to get prizes from the library. This year is especially exciting for us because my youngest can now read without any help and is determined to top his older brother. It should be interesting.”

The challenge is for both children and adult participants and will take place from June 1 – July 31. This year, the library staff has set a community reading goal of 200,000 minutes. Participants are encouraged to log their time reading via the mobile app, Beanstack, or by using a paper log available at the library. Along with reading minutes, participants are challenged to complete various activities including attending programs, drawing challenges, and book reviews. Prizes will be awarded along the way.

“We hope you and your family will join in on the fun,” Carter added. “There is no age limit to this challenge, nor is there a particular genre or reading level required. We just want everyone to escape into a good book and hope you enjoy exploring the world as much as we do.”

Along with the reading challenge, library staff have a full summer of programs planned for both children and adults including the summer reading kick off party from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on June 10.

“We will have guest speakers, walk llamas, make insects out of resin, and so much more,” said Chrislyn Gardner, youth services librarian. “We hope to see you in person, but if you are unable to, we will have weekly take and make kits you can pick up and complete at your leisure at home.”
