City Council will meet virtually on Thursday

City Council will meet Thursday, May 21, in a regular business session, followed by a work session. Both sessions will be held using Zoom, a virtual meeting application that will allow Council members to “attend” the meeting from their home or office.

City Council regularly meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, but this week’s meeting was moved to Thursday because elections for the City Council and the Danville School Board are being held on Tuesday, May 19.

This week’s meeting will begin at 7 p.m. River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air both the business and work sessions. Citizens can watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

City Council is scheduled to vote on the following matters in the business session:

  • Sale of the Pinnacles Hydroelectric complex to Northbrook Energy for $8.2 million, and purchase of the energy, capacity and renewable energy credits from the facility. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • An amendment to the City Code to maintain the real estate tax rate at 84 cents for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • The Danville Public Schools’ budget for the next school year. The proposed budget may be examined on the Danville Public School’s website.
  • A state grant of $44,635 for the local victim/witness program.
  • A state grant of $177,083 to be used to hire an attorney or victim’s advocate to work in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court dealing with victims of domestic violence.
  • Appointment of Katherine Waller to the Danville Community Policy & Management Team as the Danville Health  Department representative.

Those citizens who wish to submit a general public comment or a comment for a specific agenda item may do so by visiting this website:

Under the City Council’s rules of procedure, comments are limited to 750 words, which is the equivalent of five minutes speaking, for communications from visitors, and 400 words, which is the equivalent of three minutes speaking, for public hearings.

Citizens also may submit comments by calling a public line set up for the meeting. The phone number for the line is (434) 857-3348.

Citizens can submit comments up until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20.

In the work session, the City Council will review the latest financial statements.

The city is under a local state of emergency due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Last month, the City Council ratified the emergency declaration and adopted a resolution that allows for temporary changes to how public meetings are conducted to continue operations.

The changes enable meetings to proceed virtually during this local state of emergency.
