Emergency Go Pak

Purpose

Every Danville home should have a Go Pak - a pack you put together in case you or your family have to leave your home immediately because of a weather emergency, fire, highway / rail chemical spill, flood, etc. The Go Pak should be packed in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container, such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels, and be easily accessible if you have to leave your home in a hurry.

Creating Your Go Pak

Make putting the Go Pak together a family project and complete it before an emergency while you're still thinking calmly. Make sure it is ready to go with current information and items at all times of the year. Suggested items include:

  • Food supply (at least 3 days) for each family member that does not need electricity for storage or preparation
  • Water supply (at least 3 gallons) for each family member for drinking and sanitation
  • Copies of your important documents in a waterproof and portable container; include insurance cards, photo IDs, proof of address, etc.
  • Extra set of car and house keys
  • Credit and ATM cards and cash, especially in small denominations; we recommend you keep at least $50-$100 on hand.
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries
  • Local maps
  • Personal hygiene items and feminine supplies
  • Complete change of clothing including long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, and sturdy shoes
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each family member (consider additional bedding if the season is cool to cold)
  • A list of medications each member of your household takes, why they take them, and their dosages as well as other essential personal items; if you store medicine in your Go Pak, be sure to refill it before it expires
  • First aid kit
  • Contact and meeting place information for your household
  • Child care supplies or other special care items
  • Children's reading / coloring books or small toys (no items of much value) or other things to occupy them if you are at a shelter or a relative's home

Creating a Pet Go Pak

  • Identification tags on all collars
  • Immunization records and any medications
  • Sturdy leashes, muzzles, harnesses, carriers or cages to transport pets safely. Carriers should be large enough for the pet to stand comfortably, turn around and lie down. Include blankets or towels for bedding and warmth
  • Food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter, and can opener
  • Pet toys and treats
  • Current photos of your pet in case the pet is lost
